Biography

After keeping the Dutch alternative music scene’s collective eyebrows raised for quite a while with their energetic live act, Amsterdam based Wooden Constructions decided to dive head first into the dark hole of obscurity to record debut album People Now People. For two years nobody heard anything from them. Now they’re back. All grown up and more terrifying than ever. This is maniacal, gloomy music accompanied by strange and singular stories. People Now People will be released on May 11.

Met een frontman die in beweging en in uiterlijk wel wat weg heeft van Ian Curtis is de link naar Joy Division al snel gelegd. Niet geheel onterecht, daar de band duidelijk inspiratie haalt uit de postpunk van de jaren tachtig.

Daar ophouden doet de band Wooden Constructions echter veel tekort. Flarden posthardcore, afrobeat en indierock zijn terug te horen in het debuut People Now People. Alsof Girls Against Boys en Foals de handen in een hebben geslagen met The Fall om samen een discodansplaat te maken.

Staccato drumpartijen, soms zelfs hakkerig, funky baspartijen en schel snerpende gitaren die vilein door de nummers heen snijden vormen de basis waarover de Ian Curtis-reïncarnatie Gover Meit zijn absurde, associatieve teksten fulmineert, spreekt en uitspuugt.

Iets met nijlpaarden die hij nooit heeft uitgemaakt voor nijlpaarden omdat ze lelijk zijn, of het draaien van de tepels. Bij opener Full Brother, ontstaat even de vrees voor de zoveelste revivalband. Hoewel het nummer geenszins had misstaan op Ersatz GB, waart de geest van The Fall wel heel erg door dit werk.

Nigeriaans
In opvolger Smoul In Mali gooit het kwartet het echter meteen over een andere boeg. Hier lijkt de Nigeriaanse muziekgod Fela Kuti de regie binnen de postpunk in handen te hebben genomen. De toevoeging van blazers versterkt de Noord-Afrikaanse, polyrythmische vibe.

Een sfeer die over de hele plaat blijft hangen en wat de band onderscheidt van de halve wereld aan postpunk- en waveherhalers. Hoewel niet altijd even innovatief of origineel, gaan deze heren wel op zeer eigenwijze om met postpunk, wave en afrobeat en vermaakt deze tot een fijne, eigen combinatie.
