Rats on Rafts
This day and age, bands who court danger are hard to come by. Rotterdam-based foursome Rats on Rafts, for one, has relished and thrived as instigator. In the past, the Rats’ fiery post-punk scourge has been compared to celebrated Northern English counterparts and erstwhile bands from Rotterdam’s rich fringe music scene. With their long-awaited sophomore LP slated for release this year, the Rats have finally captured a sound to truly call their own.
Debut LP The Moon Is Big was initially released by Dutch indie label Subroutine Records, before a re-release on TopNotch amassed nation-wide critical acclaim. As a result, the Rats’ live shows rapidly gained notoriety within and beyond the Dutch borders, earning high praise from the likes of Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand), Will Sergeant (Echo & The Bunnymen) and punk figurehead John Robb (Louder Than War, The Membranes).
Amidst their recent success, Rats on Rafts aren’t likely to succumb to complacency. To preserve the music’s pure and unyielding candor, the band self-produced, recorded and mastered their upcoming second album exclusively with analogue equipment. During this painstaking yet rewarding process, Rats on Rafts strayed further from The Moon Is Big’s caustic pop flippancy. Instead, the band has veered towards the more primeval, vitriolic outbursts that epitomized their recent live shows.
The Rats’ headstrong ways don’t just end with their hands-on production values. The band has opted for further independence by co-releasing their upcoming LP on Subroutine and their own brand new label, Kurious Recordings.
